Semester
Hi, I'm Julia — welcome!
I believe language is freedom. It's the thing that lets you walk into a room anywhere in the world and actually belong there — to read the menu, joke with a neighbor, understand a poem, or land the job. That belief is why I've spent my career as a linguistic and cultural bridge between people and communities, and it's why I built ProfNextDoor.
My background
I hold a doctorate and spent five years as an ESL Methods Professor at Texas A&M University, training the next generation of language teachers. But my own teaching goes back much further — I've taught Spanish and English (both ESL and literature) at nearly every level, from 3rd grade classrooms to college lecture halls.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of teaching:
Spanish to junior high, high school, and adult learners
ESL online to students around the world, including a large community of Chinese students
ESL as a volunteer with the Brazos Interfaith Immigration Network in Texas
English for nurses in Mexico, preparing them for real-world medical communication
IELTS and TOEFL prep for students working toward academic and professional goals
French — my newest language, and one I'm having the most fun learning to teach
How I teach
I use TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) because it works the way our brains actually learn language — through stories, context, and real communication, not memorization and drills. My lessons are short, lively, and encouraging. I want you to leave every class a little more confident than you walked in.
Where I am now
These days I split my time between France and Texas, which keeps me immersed in the languages and cultures I teach — and reminds me daily why this work matters. I also love beauty in all its forms, and I think that shows up in how I teach: with warmth, care, and genuine joy in the process.
Languages open the world. I'd love to help open it for you.
